Head Teacher Slaps 100% Rent Increase On Sick Caretaker

Uma Pandya the Head Teacher at SudburyPrimary School, Watford Road, Wembley has informed her caretaker that her rent will be increased by 100% from 1st August 2005. The stunning news arrived out of the blue in a letter even though the caretaker has been off sick with work related stress and aggravated depression since February 2005 and is currently under the care of Brent Council’s Occupational Health Department.
18 Jul 2005

The caretaker currently takes home around £900 per month and the increase would take her rent from £300 to £600 per month. She has worked at the school since February 2002.

Other caretakers, who work for the council, with service tenancy agreements as part of the job, pay a maximum of £400 per month.

GMB has informed Brent's Director of Education John Christie and has been assured that he is on the case.

Tony Warr, GMB Organiser said, "Brent Council's own legal advisors have told me that only Brent Council, as the landlord and the employer, can increase caretakers and site managers rent and that they have not done so in this case. I am also assured that the school's governors are not aware of this move by the Head Teacher. I want a full apology from Uma Pandya for my member. I want the Council and the Board of Governors to reprimand her for the distress and injury her unathorised action has caused my already ill member. And I want a copper bottomed assurance that my member's rent will not be increased at all. I have advised my member to take immediate action to advise the Council's payroll department that she dose not give her permission for any in creased deduction form her wages.

I am now going to phone our GMB Union lawyers and register a personal injury claim on be half of my member for the work related stress and depression she has suffered at the hands of this power crazed bullying head teacher, Uma Pandya."

GMB Christmas Appeal Update and Authentication

Thanks to all of you who have already sent cheques to help SITRAP trade union activist, Allan Hernandez Venegas and his family, in response to our GMB Christmas Appeal. Unfortunately, owing to the preponderance of scam e-mails soliciting money, and gremlins in the system that prevented us from including photographs, many of you were not convinced that the appeal was genuine.
