GMB Stunned By Government's Cavalier Attitude To Super Casino Licensing Safeguards

GMB reacted with shock to an admission by the head of the government’s Casino advisory Panel (CAP), Professor Stephen Crow’s in today’s Financial Times that he has no idea what criteria his panel will use to allocate the licenses for current plans for a single super casino, eight medium-sized and eight large casinos.

When asked how his panel will assess the 40 applications he is quoted as saying, "How are we going make up our minds? I don't know."

GMB has made reprsentations to casinos Minister Tessa Jowell on the necessary safeguards for communities and workers affected by the introduction of the American style casino business model.

GMB's own Casinos National Steering Committee meets next Tuesday (24th January) to finalise its submission to government which will be presented next Friday (27th January). GMB has recruited over 5,000 casino workers in the last two years and is running a dedicated campaign to improve pay, holiday, sickpay, health and safety and family friendly policies in this previously un-unionised industry. GMB ran the first ever  strike improve pay in Stanley's during 2005.

The areas looking to be part of the expanded gaming industry with new casinos are Blackpool, London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Cardiff, Middlesborough, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Southend are all hoping to win casinos.

Paul Kenny, GMB Acting General Secretary said, "How can Professor Crow not know what safeguards Britain requires from this vastly profitable industry. GMB has had many consultations with the government. We spelled out to Minister Tessa Jowell's office about the basic safeguards required for the communities and the workers who will be effected by the introduction of the rapacious Americanistion of the gaming industry following the Government's liberation the gaming laws.

GMB is seeking minimum standards of employment for all casino employees. GMB is also seeking defined benefits to the communities where the casinos are built. The government needs to ensure help off set the concerns demonstrated so vehemently by these communities last year when the government blunders the launch of their Gambling Bill."

GMB Christmas Appeal Update and Authentication

Thanks to all of you who have already sent cheques to help SITRAP trade union activist, Allan Hernandez Venegas and his family, in response to our GMB Christmas Appeal. Unfortunately, owing to the preponderance of scam e-mails soliciting money, and gremlins in the system that prevented us from including photographs, many of you were not convinced that the appeal was genuine.
