GMB Reaction To Decision On Casinos Locations

GMB calls for criteria to ensure proper re-generation follows these decisions
30 Jan 2007

Although GMB welcomes this development you can bet that everyone will lose unless the regeneration provides for proper well paid, full time, permanent jobs for local people, not jobs on the national minimum wages that are subsidized by the tax payer, training to add skills, and profit returned to the local infrastructure such as retraining leisure and that all employees are represented by a trade union. When the recommendation comes before Parliament GMB will make sure that these questions are raised.

GMB consider that there is room for more than one super casino in Britain and will be pressing for the decision to have only one reviewed as soon as possible.

GMB want to see proper facilities and schemes to deal with problem gambling. This is a problem that cannot be swept under the carpet and need practical solutions. The 24 hour rule whereby people were not allowed to walk in off the street to gamble was one solution. GMB consider that casinos should not be open 24 hours a day for the same reason.

GMB Christmas Appeal Update and Authentication

Thanks to all of you who have already sent cheques to help SITRAP trade union activist, Allan Hernandez Venegas and his family, in response to our GMB Christmas Appeal. Unfortunately, owing to the preponderance of scam e-mails soliciting money, and gremlins in the system that prevented us from including photographs, many of you were not convinced that the appeal was genuine.
