The GMB Congress pledged to campaign with local groups to stop the privatisation of the Council Housing stock by pressing for the rental income and right to buy monies remain in Sedgefield and are made available for investment the in housing stock.

Similar housing plans sells off by other councils have been thrown out by residents all over the country.

Tom Brennan, GMB Northern Regional Secretary said: "There is no need to surrender this valuable asset when the financial resources generated within the Council is being spirited away to central government instead of being used to maintain quality council housing for the people of Sedgefield."

Rosie Clewes, local resident of Sedgefield Borough Council said:  "As a resident of Sedgefield I want Council Housing to remain in the control of my local authority.  If Sedgefield Borough was able to keep all of the receipts from council house rents and sales then I feel sure my aspirations would be met."

Notes to Editors:Under the Freedom of Information Act the following information was provided by Sunderland Borough Council:  In presentations to tenants the Council has made it clear that the present housing subsidy arrangements means that some rental income and right to buy receipts raised locally are being transferred to central government for redistribution.  If these receipts were able to remain in Sedgefield and be available for investment the Council would be able to meet tenant aspirations without the need to consider other housing options.
