GMB The
Union For Co-operative Funeralcare
Workers
The Latest
Position
The Co-operative Group has
taken over the Plymouth and South West Co-operative where GMB was a
recognised Trade Union, not just in Funeralcare. Under Transfer of
Undertakings Protection Employment regulations
(TUPE) recognition transfers to the new business
namely The Co-operative. This means in effect that GMB are
now a recognised Trade Union once again.
GMB is now seeking urgent
discussions with the Board to re-establish full bargaining rights.
Former members are overjoyed with this news and because of this
development and recent successes we have had elsewhere in the
business; members are coming back to GMB in droves.
GMB is proud of its record
and the service we provide to members in The Co-operative and
beyond which is why year on year GMB membership is increasing.
Southern Co-operative Funeralcare
Mutual Services (Portsmouth) Ltd.
GMB are the sole recognised Trade Union within
the Southern Co-operative covering the counties of Hampshire
(including Isle of Wight), Dorset, Surrey, West Sussex, Wiltshire
and Berkshire and have a relationship with Southern Co-operative
going back over 60 years.
The Funeralcare division trades as Mutual
Services (Portsmouth) Ltd going back to the days when they started
out as a smaller society called The Portsea Island Co-operative and
eventually merged with other Co-operative Societies to become one
of the largest Co-operatives in the country.
Southern Co-operative also owns a small number
of Funeral Directors which continue to trade under their original
family names but who also recognise GMB as the sole specialised
union for Funeral Service Staff.

The Campaign History
In 2007 The Co-operative Board de-recognised GMB after more than
100 years, terminating a relationship that went back to the
19th Century Victorian era. This was a sad day for
democracy, Trade Union rights and ethics given the background of
The Co-operative movement, a group owned by its members which
claims to be ‘Different.’ Read
