Welcome to the website of the GMB North West & Irish Region

The GMB North West & Irish Region was formed in January 2007 following a decision to reorganise boundaries of the former Liverpool, North Wales & Irish and Lancashire Regions and reduce the total number of GMB regions from ten to nine. The Region covers the North West of England including Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester together with Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man.

GMB is one of the largest unions in the UK with around 600,000 members and the North West & Irish Region services nearly 90,000 of this total membership. Our aim is to improve the quality of life of all of our members and their families. Whether you are male or female, from an ethnic minority, have a disability,  work full-time or part-time in the public or private sector we have something to offer.

Paul McCarthy
Regional Secretary

UNION STRUCTURE

The Branch is the basic unit of the Union's organisation. Branches consist of all the members in a given area or, in cases where enough members are concentrated, it can be industrial or workplace based.

Each GMB Branch has its Officers : Secretary, President, Auditor, Youth Officer, Equality Officer and Race Officer. All Branch Officers are elected every four years at the last Branch meeting in June. Some Branches are large enough to warrant full-time staff whose job it is to run the administration.

In the Workplace Shop Stewards and Staff Representatives are directly elected by the membership. Many workplaces also have a Health & Safety Representative and an Equal Rights Officer. Large workplaces often have a senior shop steward known as the convenor.

The GMB is organised in nine Regions and they are responsible for membership servicing.

The North West and Irish Region like the other eight has a team of dedicated officers, staff and administration managed by the Regional Secretary, in our case Paul McCarthy. Paul is answerable to the Regional Council for the workings of the Union and its officers. The Council is made up of lay members of the Union who are elected every four years and in turn elect a Committee to oversee the business of the Region.
