Fight Privatisation At 79 Schools

GMB Oppose Plans By AET Academy Chain To Privatise 525 Support Staff At 79 Schools In England

Public money meant for schools will be siphoned off to private shareholders unless AET privatisation plans are stopped says GMB.

GMB, the union for school support staff, is launching a campaign to oppose privatisation by Academies Enterprise Trust (AET) of the entire support function in 79 schools in England involving 525 staff. See table below for location of schools and note1 in notes to editors for list of schools.

AET intend to form a new joint venture company, 49% owned by a private provider, which would be responsible for all school support services in the 79 schools.

All staff excluding teachers, school leaders and for the time being teaching assistants are affected, and would transfer to the employment of the joint venture.

The schools are spread across England as follows:

Region name                  Number of academies within the region

Kent and South/West Essex               10

London                                                8

Midlands                                              13

Middlesbrough and Humber               12

South                                                   7

Suffolk and North/East Essex                        9

West                                                    10

Yorkshire                                             8

Avril Chambers, GMB national officer for school staff, said “AET is going ahead with this plan despite the government’s claims that they would not allow profits to be made from education.

AET is the largest academy chain in the country with 79 schools. AET is looking to privatise every part of the running of their schools apart from teaching. Under the plans 525 support staff currently employed by AET would be transferred to the private joint venture.

Head teachers, governors and the community will lose control of vital operational decisions and staff, as the private sector prioritises the academies’ operations towards making profit rather than education.

These privatisation plans are unprecedented, and are extremely worrying for pupils, parents and staff in these schools. If this is allowed to go ahead it will set a blueprint for the academy sector, and it will only be a matter of time before the others follow suit.

The public money involved is earmarked for the education of our children. GMB will fight these plans to siphon it off to private shareholders. We all know what privatisation will mean – driving down the pay and conditions of work for staff, letting the physical facilities get run down, just to make a profit. It will drive down standards and ultimately it’s the kids in these schools who will suffer.

If AET can save money by making their support functions more efficient these savings should be reinvested into education, not used to stuff the wallets of rich shareholders.

GMB will do everything we can to fight these plans and expose this scandal. Given that AET has a history of financial irregularities I wouldn’t trust them to look after my cat, let alone millions of pounds of public money. See Note 2 below. Every member of staff in an AET school should join GMB now so we can stop this before it is too late.”
