But 21 are still set to close in a dark day for parents and children of the UK’s second city.
GMB, the union for children’s centre workers, is celebrating a ‘grim victory’ after a campaign saved five children’s centres from closure.
Birmingham City Council announced the closure of 21 children’s centres today – down from the initial list of 26.
Gillian Ogilvie, GMB Senior Organiser, said:
“GMB is obviously pleased our campaign has saved five children’s centres in Birmingham.
“However with 21 still set to close it is something of a grim victory for parents and children of the UK’s second city.
“We have been working hard behind the scenes to get the best deal we can for all the staff involved.
“The closures mean this is still a dark day, but we feel we have achieved the best achievable outcome for not only our members but the parents and children of Birmingham.”
