Chancellor Makes 'Dog's Dinner' U-Turn

Wednesday, March 15, 2017

Hammond drops plans to increase national insurance contributions for self-employed workers as union brands tax policy “dog’s dinner”.

GMB union today called on Chancellor Philip Hammond to take attention on businesses using bogus self-employment to avoid paying employers' national insurance contributions and deny workers their basic rights.

The call comes us the Chancellor told MPs he was dropping plans to increase national insurance contributions for the self-employed, which had been announced in last week’s Budget statement.

Tim Roache, GMB General Secretary said:

"The Chancellor has made a complete dog's dinner of tax policy - and caused chaos for workers up and down the country.

“Instead of tackling bogus self-employment, which exploits workers and allows companies to scam the taxman, the Chancellor has picked the wrong battle and lost humiliatingly - leaving a black hole in his Budget.

“The Chancellor should turn his attention on businesses using bogus self-employment to avoid paying employers' national insurance contributions and denying workers their basic rights.

“Instead of looking for a soft target to pay for the Chancellor's Budget black hole he should instruct HMRC to enforce the law and take action on firms undercutting other businesses through bogus self-employment, which costs the country so much."
