GMB Win Support From East Of England Labour Party Conference For Tendering For NHS Contract In Cambridgeshire To Be Stopped

GMB has won important support from a conference of the East of England Labour Party that the tendering process for an NHS contract in Cambridge to be stopped when it slammed the Tory policy of NHS privatisation, cuts and underfunding.

In addition GMB has also written to all of the board members of the CCG, ahead of tomorrow's (3rd December) lobby of the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) of Cambridgeshire NHS Trust in Ely, calling on them to end the tendering of £1 billion of NHS services as the process.

The lobby tomorrow 3rd December is over how the tendering process for the Cambridgeshire Integrated Older People’s Pathway and Adult Community Services contract is being handled by the CCG.

GMB is accusing the CCG of refusing to release key information relating to the tender when it refuse to supply information following a Freedom of Information request about the tender from GMB. The lobby takes place at:

TUESDAY 3RD DECEMBER

ETHELDREDA ROOM

ELY CATHEDRAL EDUCATION AND CONFERENCE CENTRE

PALACE GREEN

ELY, CB7 4EW

The contract which is worth up to £1billion was put out to tender in April 2013 by the newly formed Clinical Commissioning Group following its failure to attain Foundation Trust status.

Private contractor SERCO left the tendering process after the company's murky track record with public contracts was revealed.

Steve Sweeney GMB Organiser said, "There are too many questions that have been left unanswered by the CCG. With only weeks until the short-listing of contractors, the public are still being kept in the dark about our NHS.

GMB is urging as many people as possible to attend tomorrow's lobby in Ely and defend our NHS from the vultures of the private sector. GMB, the union for NHS workers, plans another lobby of the next meeting of the Cambridge and Peterborough NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) meeting at 1pm on 3 rd December in Ely.

GMB will lobby the meeting to tell Clinical Commissioning Group that the tendering process should be stopped with immediate effect as it has now clear that key information relating to the service tender has been withheld, exposing the lack of transparency in the process and highlighting the secrecy and lack of any meaningful consultation."

Huw Jones, Labour Parliamentary Prospective Candidate for South East Cambridgeshire said, “I am concerned that decisions on services to the elderly and vulnerable are being made in secret and information is being withheld from the public.

The CCG's primary responsibility is to the people of Cambridgeshire, the commercial needs of companies bidding for these services should not influence the CCG.

How can we hold them to account for poor service if we don't know the service levels written into the contracts?"
