GMB Scotland Protest In North Lanarkshire On 31 March 2016 For Fair Settlements To Equal Pay Claims
Some of these women have died waiting and now their families are still waiting for the council to give them back their money says GMB Scotland.
GMB Scotland Equal Pay Now! campaign will demonstrate outside the North Lanarkshire Council meeting on Thursday 31 March 2016, for a fair settlement to GMB members’ equal pay claims.
The demonstration will begin at 3:30pm on Thursday March 31st at the following address:
GMB Scotland has also taken out half page adverts in every local paper across North Lanarkshire to promote the Equal Pay Now! campaign.
Last year, GMB Scotland wrote to every elected Labour official in North Lanarkshire to encourage them to finally settle the issue of equal pay, or face GMB taking action against the council.
GMB estimates that there are up to 2,000 workers, men and women, employed by North Lanarkshire Council who may be entitled to an equal pay claim. GMB Scotland is the only union that is still able to pursue Equal Pay Claims against North Lanarkshire Council.
Hazel Nolan, GMB regional organiser, said “Hundreds of women across North Lanarkshire Council are still being forced to battle with the council's legal department to get justice for being paid less money than men for doing the same work.
Not only have these women suffered by being subject to a discriminatory employer to begin with, but now the council are forcing them to suffer further indignity by dragging them through a lengthy and completely unnecessary legal process to get the justice they deserve. Meanwhile the council squander taxpayers money in legal fees to fight their own workers for the money they owe them.
The council leader for North Lanarkshire, Cllr Jim Logue, and his fellow Councillors are in a position to sort this out immediately. The only thing stopping these women from getting the money they deserve, the money that they worked for, that belongs to them, is the political will to do so. Some of these women have died waiting and now their families are still waiting for the council to give them back their money.”

GMB Scotland Calls On North Lanarkshire Council To Settle Equal Pay Claims
This injustice has been allowed to drag out for years, and can no longer be tolerated says GMB Scotland.
GMB Scotland has marked national women’s day 2016 by writing a letter to North Lanarkshire council regarding unsettled Equal pay claims. See Notes to Editors for a copy of the letter.
Hazel Nolan, GMB regional organiser, said “North Lanarkshire Council is in a position to resolve this issue immediately. Continuing to deny these GMB women members the money they deserve, the money that they worked for, that belongs to them, means that it is continuing discrimination against working women.
GMB believes that this is not just unacceptable, it is an absolute injustice and as a Labour Council, it demeans the very values of the Labour Party is supposed to uphold.
GMB has now formed an action group on Equal Pay. We will be taking action to ensure that the right thing is done by these workers, and that they get what they rightly deserve. This injustice has been allowed to drag out for years, and can no longer be tolerated.”
