30% ex Barnet council houses for rent

Nearly 30% Of Ex Council Dwellings In Barnet Now Owned By Millionaire Elite Private Landlords GMB Investigation Shows

The “right to buy” has turned into a rich harvest for the greedy elite and the same will happen with the properties acquired from Housing Associations under legislation currently in the House of Lords says GMB.

A new GMB investigation of Land Registry records shows that of 768 dwellings in council blocks in Barnet where tenants acquired the leasehold under “right to buy” legislation some 224 dwellings are now owned by private landlords who rent them to private tenants. That is nearly 29.2% of the total sold by the council.

There are 12 private landlords who own more than one of these 224 dwellings. One private landlord owns 9, another 2 landlords each own 4, another 3 landlords each own 3 and a further 6 landlords each own 2 of these dwellings.

GMB used the Land Registry to discover who the owners are in 60 blocks of flats in Barnet with a total number of units of 1,855. The search revealed that 768 are leasehold properties acquired by the tenants where the council is still the freehold owner. Of these 768 leasehold properties searched, 224 (29.2%) have a registered owner different from the property address. Set out in the table below in notes to editors are the figures for each of the 60 blocks. This data is from the public record using the Land Registry material.

The landlords owning more than one property are as follows: Countryside Properties (UK) Ltd owing 9 properties; Barratt Evolution Ltd, and Ravi Sevan Kesisyan each owning 4; BPT Ltd, Chandrika Shah & Nimla Shah, and New Granville LLP each owning 3; David Allan, Harshed Kantilal Soni & Rita Soni, Ida Spinka, Prafula Premji Jagatia, Sansara, and Peter & Frances Cowen Ltd each owning 2 properties.

One of the companies in Barnet owning more than one property is Countryside Properties (UK) Ltd, which is owned by Luxembourg based OCM Luxembourg Coppice Topco.

Gary Doolan, GMB political officer, said “This investigation, following on from the one we did at Wandsworth, lays bare the harsh reality of the exploitation of our social housing stock.

It shows private businesses making vast profits from the public purse while the people these homes were built for sit on waiting lists that never move. To add insult to injury many are using offshore tax havens to avoid paying tax on these profits. The companies we’ve found will be the tip of the iceberg in Barnet and Wandsworth and throughout the rest of London and the UK.

These homes were built and designed to be rented by ordinary London families. The investigation exposes Mrs Thatcher’s flagship policy of “right to buy” for individuals as nothing more than a charter for the exploitation of our social housing for private profit. Her plan to create a home owning democracy has turned into a “buy to let” bonanza.

While tens of thousands of ordinary London families are unable to find council house to rent and the elite are scooping them up by the tractor load. The “right to buy” has turned into a rich harvest for greedy elite and the same will happen with the properties acquired from Housing Associations under legislation currently in the House of Lords.”

Councillor Ross Houston, Barnet Labour Group Deputy Leader & Housing Spokesperson, said “Half of all households in the borough cannot afford private rents so it is a scandal that so many council homes sold under the right to buy in Barnet are now being let privately.

This is pushing up the housing benefit bill which has ballooned by 74 per cent since 2007 to £263.8million as more and more people need to rely on support from the benefits system to be able to afford their rent. It is simply wrong that the benefits system is effectively subsidising wealthy private landlords while families are struggling to make ends meet.”

Notes to Editors

1 The table below shows the 60 blocks of flats in Barnet that have been checked. The researchers were Joe Smith and Jack Coleman who were employed in the GMB press office to undertake the pain staking research using Land Registry data.
