Brighton Chosen As Venue For 102nd GMB Congress In 2019
Dublin, the venue for 2nd Congress in 1891, will host the 98th Congress in 2015, the 99th Congress will be in Bournemouth in 2016 and the 100th Congress will be in Plymouth says GMB.
Brighton has been chosen as the venue for the 102nd GMB Congress in 2019. This is the first time the Congress goes back to Brighton since the 95th GMB Congress in Brighton in 2012. The event is expected to attract 850 delegates, visitors and exhibitors and result in £2m worth of economic benefit. The Brighton Centre will host the congress with a range of hotels across the city providing accommodation over the 5 day event.
GMB is a general union with more than 631,000 members in Britain and Ireland.
GMB is the direct successor to the Gas Workers & General Union which was formed on 31st March 1889 by Will Thorne. The union spread like wild fire across Britain and Ireland after it liberated gas workers from the unrelenting toil of working six day per week for twelve hour per days by winning a working day of eight hours per day.
Delegates attending GMB Congress are the members who have been elected to represent members from every part of the UK and Ireland and who are employed in every sector of the economy. Congress is the supreme policy making body in the union.
Since the 95th Congress was held in Brighton in 2012 the 96th Congress was held in Plymouth in 2013 and the 97th Congress was held in Nottingham in 2014. Future venues are Dublin for the 98th Congress in 2015 which was the venue for the 2nd Congress in 1891. The 99th Congress will be in Bournemouth in 2016. Plymouth will be the venue for the 100th Congress in 2017. The venue for the 101nd in 2018 is yet to be confirmed. Belfast, which was the venue for the 23rd Congress in 1930, is being considered as a venue for 2018 when new conference facilities are developed.
Julia Gallagher, Visit Brighton’s Head of Sales, said: “We’ve had a bumper year of conference wins so far this year and this is another significant addition to our burgeoning business balance sheet. We’ve had a very positive response from GMB delegates who have come to the city in previous years and look forward to welcoming them back in 2019.”
Steve Short, GMB Executive Officer, added: “GMB Congress is a really important annual event in the Union. Consequently the Union’s Executive Council takes great care to find venues that are suitable for the event.
Brighton ticks a lot of boxes as a destination and we always receive positive feedback from delegates who stay in the city. The Brighton Centre’s central location makes it easy to get to and, as a purpose built venue, it has the range of flexible space needed to accommodate a varied programme and accommodate all delegates, including those with access needs. I’m sure delegates will be pleased with this choice and expect it will contribute to it being a well-attended event.”
