GMB Scotland Calls On North Lanarkshire Council To Settle Equal Pay Claims

This injustice has been allowed to drag out for years, and can no longer be tolerated says GMB Scotland.

GMB Scotland has marked national women’s day 2016 by writing a letter to North Lanarkshire council regarding unsettled Equal pay claims. See Notes to Editors for a copy of the letter.

Hazel Nolan, GMB regional organiser, said “North Lanarkshire Council is in a position to resolve this issue immediately. Continuing to deny these GMB women members the money they deserve, the money that they worked for, that belongs to them, means that it is continuing discrimination against working women.

GMB believes that this is not just unacceptable, it is an absolute injustice and as a Labour Council, it demeans the very values of the Labour Party is supposed to uphold.

GMB has now formed an action group on Equal Pay. We will be taking action to ensure that the right thing is done by these workers, and that they get what they rightly deserve. This injustice has been allowed to drag out for years, and can no longer be tolerated.”

Notes to Editors

Letter to North Lanarkshire Council from GMB Scotland

Councillor Jim Logue,

I am writing to you today, International Women’s Day, regarding the outstanding issue of Equal Pay in North Lanarkshire Council.

GMB Union wrote to you, and every elected official in North Lanarkshire, last year to say that failure on the behalf of the council to finally settle the issue of equal pay would result in GMB taking action against the council.

Today as I write to you, hundreds of working class women, across North Lanarkshire Council are still being forced to battle with your legal department to get justice for discrimination endured at the hands of your council. Not only have these women suffered by being subject to a discriminatory employer to begin with, but now you and your council are forcing them to suffer the further indignity of being dragged through a lengthy and completely unnecessary legal process to see their wrongs righted.

As Council Leader for North Lanarkshire you are in a position to resolve this immediately. Continuing to deny these women the money they deserve, the money that they worked for, that belongs to them, means that you are presiding over a council that is continuing discrimination against working women. GMB believes that this is not just unacceptable, it is an absolute injustice- and as a Labour Council, that it demeans the very values of the Labour Party is supposed to uphold.

Therefore I am writing to you to inform you that GMB Union has now formed an action group on Equal Pay. We will be taking action for not just our members, but for all employees across North Lanarkshire Council to ensure that the right thing is done by these workers, and that they get what they rightly deserve. This injustice has been allowed by your council to drag out for years, and can no longer be tolerated.

These working women are not just your employees, they are also your constituents. They are your neighbours, friends, relatives. These women are the pillars on which this community is built, and we will be ensuring that communities across North Lanarkshire are made well aware of how they are being treated by a council, and a party that purports to champion them.

Regards,

Hazel Nolan Hazel (SC)

GMB Regional Organiser
