LEAKED PAPERS SHOW GOVERNMENT TRIED TO HIDE NEGATIVE BREXIT IMPACT FOR AT LEAST 1 MILLION WORKERS
Analysis Minsters tried to keep quiet clearly shows negative impact on chemical, food and drink industries – both huge employers - says GMB.
GMB, Britain’s general union, has criticised the Government for trying to hide the negative impact Brexit would have on the lives of up to one million workers.
The Government today finally published its Brexit impact modelling – something GMB has been demanding for more than a year.
Ministers were quite happy to keep the whole of the UK in the dark over Brexit - and only released their findings to the Brexit Committee after the Commons passed a motion demanding this in January.
The assessment makes sobering reading for around one million people whose jobs are supported by the in the chemicals, pharmaceutical, food and drinks industries.
Eamon O’Hearn, GMB National Officer, said:
“We’ve been calling for the Government to come clean about Brexit for more than a year.
“Now we see some of what they were trying to hide. “This analysis clearly shows the negative impact on the chemical industry - currently a bigger UK exporter than aerospace and automotive industries combined - and the food and drink industry, which is the single largest UK manufacturing sector.
“These industries are particularly sensitive to trade and import barriers, which highlights the potential damage from Government’s red line on not being in “a” or “the” customs union. “GMB has been calling for this analysis to be made public so that UK workers and the public can see for themselves what the future could hold for their jobs, families and communities.
“This is not a political game - this affects people’s lives, their jobs, their families and their futures.”
