JOB CUTS AT COUNCILS NEARS 50,000 AS 13 COUNCILS ANNOUNCE A FURTHER 9,900 JOBS UNDER THREAT GMB ROUND UP SHOWS

 

GMB members in local government front line services are being swamped by these job loss announcements and we are now up to a devastating 50,000

 

Another 9,900 jobs in 13 English Councils are under threat bringing the total to nearly 50,000 at 43 councils a new GMB round up published today shows. See notes to Editors for details. These arise directly as a result of the Tory Liberal Comprehensive Spending Review last month.

 

The most recent announcements of jobs under threat are as follows: Bradford City Council 2,000 jobs; Gateshead Council 600 jobs; London Borough of Ealing 300 jobs ;Cumbria County Council 600 jobs ; Northumberland County Council1,000 jobs; Isle of Wight Council 300 jobs ; Newcastle upon Tyne City Council 2,000 jobs; North Tyneside Council 300 jobs ; Lincolnshire County Council1,000 jobs; London Borough of Harringay1,000; London Borough of Brent 350 jobs; Bath and North East Somerset 300 jobs and Hartlepool Council 150 jobs.

 

GMB officers are receiving daily the section 188 statutory advance notice of redundancies and HR1 form from local councils and details are being monitored by the union nationally. The notice triggers a 90 day consultation period on the reasons for redundancies and basis for selection.

GMB members in local government front line services are being swamped by these job loss announcements and we are now up to a devastating 50,000."
