70,993 jobs to go at 71 councils

JOB LOSSES AT HIGHLAND, WEST BERKSHIRE, WALTHAM FOREST AND GLOUCESTERSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL BRING TOTAL POSTS UNDER THREAT TO 70,993

The OBR have said that one third of a million public sector jobs will go and the issuing of the HR1s notices is the beginning of the process of these jobs being cut says GMB

GMB officers have been informed of 1000 jobs under threat at Highland Council over next four years of which 310 will go before end March 2011. 652 jobs are threatened at London Borough of Waltham Forest and 140 at West Berkshire. Another 516 jobs are threatened at Gloucestershire County council over four years in addition to 484 in year one announced yesterday. This brings the number announced this week to 9,033 in 17 councils.

For councils in England Scotland and Wales the total notified to date is 70,993 in 71 councils as a result of the Comprehensive Spending Review announced in October. See list below for all 71. GMB officers are currently involved in a 90 day consultation process as a result of the union receiving a section 188 statutory advance HR1 notice of redundancies. In most cases councils are seeking to reorganize to delete vacant posts and councils are seeking volunteers as part of this process.

Yesterday GMB announced that the union is dealing with job losses of 1,000 at Wirral Borough Council, 550 at Cheshire East UA, 450 at Cambridgeshire County Council and 484 at Gloucestershire County Council in year one. On Wednesday GMB announced that the union is dealing with job losses at Suffolk County Council,1500; Aberdeen City Council, 900; Plymouth City Council, 500; Angus Council,500; London Borough of Barnet, 354; Redcar and Cleveland Council,285; Merthyr Tydfil CBC;120 Derbyshire Dales Council, 40; North Lincolnshire Council, 21; and City of London, 21.

Paul Kenny GMB General Secretary said "This week 9,033 posts in 17 councils are under threat. This brings the total under threat to 70,993 before the level of grant support for English councils is announced on Monday.

Earlier this week Local Government Minister Grant Shapps said  "Regularly the unions are confusing job cuts with a reduction in posts in local government". In saying this Grant Shapps is talking complete nonsense, subterfuge and claptrap.

Grant Shapp should ask himself a simple question, 'Why are all these Tory and Liberal councils issuing Section 188 Advance statutory HR1 notification of redundancies to GMB if there are no redundancies?.'

The OBR have said that one third of a million public sector jobs will go. This issuing of the HR1s notices is the beginning of the process of these jobs being cut. He cannot pretend that jobs are not going and it is futile for him to do so. Unfilled posts deleted are no longer available for the 3 people on the dole chasing each vacancy.

GMB officers are meeting with members in all these councils to seek their views on what they want the union to do in this unprecedented situation."
