NUMBER OF TOWN

AS TORY MINISTER WRONGLY CLAIMS SAYS GMB
Mr Neill is trying so hard to

GMB commented on remarks made by CLG
minister Bob Neill about town hall jobs.
Brian Strutton GMB National Secretary
for Public Services said "Mr Neill is trying so hard to
duck responsibility for the £6.4bn cuts on local authorities that
he is resorting to falsehood and error to malign councils and their
staff. He says there has been an 'explosion' in town hall jobs – in
fact they have fallen in number.
Mr Neill is confusing all
local authority jobs (including schools, where there has rightly
been growth) with town hall staff. His story is just plain wrong,
town hall staff numbers have fallen not risen. He tries to make a
case about non-jobs by picking a few job titles without considering
what they actually do – these are real individuals doing proper
jobs, many low paid, who Mr Neill is personally singling out for
criticism in a way that surely infringes their rights.
What you never hear is anyone
in government saying thanks for all the home helps, the schools
dinner ladies, the social workers, the binmen, the classroom
assistants who support our communities day in and day out. That's
because they just don't care about people as Mr Neill
proves."
