MORRISON IN LEEDS HOUSING TO MEET ON MONDAY 21 NOVEMBER TO CONSIDER
BALLOTING FOR STRIKE ACTION IN PAY AND JOBS DISPUTE
Leeds City Council housing maintenance
staff with 1,256 years of services face 21 jobs cuts by Christmas
and longer hours for no additional pay
There will be a mass meeting of GMB, Unite and
UCATT members employed by Leeds contractor Morrison on Monday
21st November at the Leeds Civic Hall at 6pm. This will
be to discuss the recent redundancy proposal and convey the latest
developments to the 98 members employed by this contactor. Members
at this meeting will determine if the unions are to be asked for
authority to hold official ballots for potential industrial
action on this issue.
GMB has called on Leeds City council
contractor Morrison to remove the threat of job losses and pay cuts
for 98 long service housing maintenance workers whose jobs were
outsourced seven months ago. 21 face being made redundant by
Christmas. The 98 workers between them have contributed 1,256 years
combined service to the people of Leeds. See notes to editors for
details.
Private contractor Morrison runs the social
housing maintenance contract for Leeds City Council. They have now
put 98 jobs at risk only seven months after taking over the
contract last April. This is despite wanting to increase working
hours and introduce a night shift while still sub-contracting
out 30% of its work.
Morrison has also written to the workforce
seeking volunteers willing to increase their contractual hours of
work to more hours during the week and add Saturday working for no
more money than they are paid now. The 90 days consultation notice
includes this change so the company is trying to impose the
increase in hours and cut in pay even if no one volunteers. The
other issue is they are still sub-contracting out 30% of their
work.
GMB officers refused to attend a meeting last week because
Morrison’s refused to allow the workers who are threatened by these
cuts and changes to attend the meeting thereby excluding them from
at the very beginning of the alleged consultation period.
Jon Smith, GMB Organiser said, “This
meeting will determine if the unions are to be asked for authority
to hold official ballots for potential industrial action on
this issue.
We have 21 local workers who are
looking down the barrel of a gun at being on the scrap heap at
Christmas. Many more are looking at more hours work for the same
money. This company is getting public money to maintain Leeds City
Council’s housing stock and cuttings it’s existing workforces jobs
and pay is simply not acceptable.
GMB will get to the bottom of this
shambles. What isn't clear at the moment is whether this is rank
incompetence on the part of Morrison, a blatant attempt to boost
their profits at the expense of the workforce, or some combination
of the two. What is certain is that this is a massive kick in the
teeth to loyal and hard working tradesmen and their families who
have spent 1,256 years working for their local
community."
