More Strikes As Airport Workers Reject Deal

JOHN LENNON AIRPORT SET FOR MORE TRAVEL CHAOS AS GMB MEMBERS TURN DOWN PAY DEAL

It’s not surprising GMB members rejected Liverpool Airport Ltd’s new  pay offer – because to accept it would mean a real terms pay cut

Liverpool’s John Lennon airport faces more travel disruption after GMB members turned down a new pay deal.

During a consultation ballot, 68% of GMB members rejected the company’s latest below inflation pay offer of just 2.2%.

As a result, GMB has issued Liverpool Airport Ltd with four further days of strikes in September, in which 80 workers from aviation rescue and fire fighting services, the control room, engineering and driver operations and airport bird control will walk out. [See note 1 for list of strike dates]

These will be followed by a minimum of eight strike days in October 2018

The company’s offer is 2.2% and a £150 lump sum – only just above their initial offer of 2%.

Meanwhile GMB has dropped expectations from 3.6% all the way to just 3% in a bid to avert industrial action

Accepting the deal would mean a real terms pay cut for GMB members.

Eddie Parker, GMB Organiser, said:

“It’s not surprising GMB members rejected Liverpool Airport Ltd’s new  pay offer – because to accept it would mean a real terms pay cut for them

“The company really don’t seem willing to compromise – increasing their offer by just .2%

“Meanwhile we dropped our expectations by .6% to try an avoid industrial action.

“We have informed the company strike action will not be suspended unless a 3.6% increase is offered.

“Despite this attitude, GMB is more than willing to get round the table and try and reach a deal which will stop industrial action - and avoid any more disruption for travellers.”
