Demo Against Northamptonshire Council Incompetence

GMB STAGE DEMO OVER LATEST £70 MILLION CUTS BY NORTHAMPTONSHIRE COUNCIL

This is going to mean serious job losses and unprecedented cuts to services and we expect children's services to be most severely hit

GMB, the union for Northamtonshire County Council (NCC) workers, is staging a demonstration over the latest £70 million cuts set to be imposed by the local authority.

Cash-strapped NCC has been issued with a Section 114 notice – the second in six months -  forcing it to make another £70 million worth of cuts – threatening jobs and services across the county.

The demonstration will take place today at 4.30pm

Northamptonshire County Council
One Angel Square
Angel Street

An emergency staff meeting is being held inside.

In March, an investigation by GMB revealed NCC forked out a whopping £900,000 to a consultancy owned by former CEO Damon Lawrenson. [1]

NCC has been forced to ban all new spending to balance its budget for this year, while auditor KPMG then issued a legal warning that led to the council re-working its budget for 2018-19 to make £40m worth of cuts. [2]

Mr Lawrenson left his post as Chief Executive ‘by mutual consent’ after just five months in the job. [3]

Mr Lawrenson was appointed in November and a separate FOI by GMB shows no other candidates were shortlisted or even considered for the role of interim CEO. [4]

Rachelle Wilkins, GMB Organiser, said:

“Northamptonshire County Council has been stripped bare thanks to gross incompetence and central government cuts.

“Now, they have to save £70 million this year,

“This is going to mean serious job losses and unprecedented cuts to services and we expect children's services to be most severely hit.

“NCC has now been hit by an unprecedented two Section 114 notices in just six months.

“Today’s demonstration is calling for a proper investigation into why, in 2015, a Section 114 notice was stopped from being issued by the Conservative council, the council leader and the chief executive.

“They must have known that to carry on spending recklessly would leave the council in the terrible positions it’s in today.
