Northern Ireland Education Pay Protest

Tuesday, October 22, 2013

GMB Northern Ireland Members Protest 1pm Tomorrow (23rd October) At Department Of Education In Bangor Over Delay To Pay Award

Members who have waited patiently since April are angry about delay and are no longer willing to accept any further delays says GMB.

GMB members employed in the education sector in Northern Ireland will join with union colleagues from NIPSA, UNISON and UNITE on Wednesday 23rd October in a lunchtime protest outside the Northern Ireland headquarters of the Department of Education in Bangor over the on-going delay in receiving their contractual pay award.

The details of the protest are as follows:

At 1pm on Wednesday 23rd October 2013

Rathgael House

Balloo Road

Rathgill

Bangor BT19 7PR

GMB members will attend with flags and banners.

John Dawson, GMB Regional officer, said “The protest on Wednesday will involve union members from all of the 4 main unions representing support staff and non-teaching staff across the Education Sector, standing together in unity.

These members have been extremely patient since April of this year waiting for their incremental pay increase.  Their patience however has worn very thin as they see others in the Education Sector receive their increases while they continue to wait.

Many members are low paid workers and it is totally unacceptable that a pay increase, which they are contractually entitled to, is withheld as a result of a failure by the Department to ensure a timely approval process which enables employers to pay staff their entitlement when it is due.

A month after meeting with the Minister to challenge the on-going delay we are still not clear when payment will be issued.  This protest has been called because members are angry about the treatment they have received and are no longer willing to accept any further delays."
