Sheffield City Council Plan To Impose Four More Years Of Misery On Workers

Members have had enough and simply cannot believe that a Labour Party leader is taking further measures to slash terms and condition of hardworking employees.

GMB, the union for Sheffield council workers, has criticised Sheffield City Council’s plan to impose four more years of pay misery on workers.

The authority intends to continue with their current pay strategy which, if it goes ahead, would see workers' pay and conditions cut for the 12th year running.

As well as the real terms pay cut imposed by the public sector pay cap, Sheffield council workers would have their annual incremental pay increase slashed and would be forced to take extra unpaid leave.

No other authority in the UK has launched such a prolonged attack on its own workforce.

GMB believes that it’s unfair to ask members with incremental headroom to shoulder the biggest burden of Government cuts

GMB, along with other Local Government unions Unison and Unite, has rejected the deal outright.

A study by GMB as part of the union’s nation-wide ‘End The Public Sector Pay Pinch’ campaign revealed the average full-time public sector worker has lost on £8,953 in real terms between since 2010, and they face a further £4,073 in cuts by 2020 (£13,000 in total). [1]

Lee Parkinson, GMB Organiser, said:

“Our members have had enough and simply cannot believe that a Labour Party leader is taking further measures to attack the terms and condition of its hardworking employees.

“The reason for this rejection was because staff for many years had no pay rise and when pay rises were reinstated, they were capped at 1% - well below inflation – leading to a real terms pay cut.

“Members have had an average £10,000 taken from their wage since 2010 due to the pay cap – and that’s not even taking into account the loss to their pensions.

“Enough is enough – its time Sheffield City Council gave staff a proper pay rise."
