Sheffield GMB Member Wins Learning Award At TUC In Bournemouth Today
GMB Yorkshire & Humberside is so proud of Sarah’s achievements and we hope that her TUC award and the recognition it brings will encourage other GMB members to get back to learning which can improve their life opportunities so much.
GMB member Sarah Barnes today received the Top TUC Union Learning Rep Award at the TUC conference in Bournemouth. She was presented with the award by Frances O’Grady TUC General Secretary.
GMB member Sarah Barnes left school at 16 as a young mum with no qualifications. She return to learning as a GMB member and part of the Union Learning Reps scheme.
Having benefitted herself from a Union Learning course she then became a Union Learning rep herself and now work with the clients and staff of the Doncaster Branch of homeless charity Action Housing & Support social enterprise.
Originally from Doncaster she now lives with husband Mark Daughter of 21, two teenage step daughters in Sheffield.
Recently Sarah has put a bid to the Union Learning Fund for eight tablets and a printer to further enable clients to learn all the up to the minute new technology skills.
Sarah Barnes, GMB members and Union Learning Rep said, “My ULR role is very rewarding for me being able to out open up opportunities for client that they may not have otherwise been able to do or even know about.
The Union Learning Rep is a very rewarding role. I am proud to be able to help people get back to learning and it is wonderful to see them find educational success and get their lives back on course.
I have recently found the funding for and organised a new course. I enjoy finding out what the staff and clients of the Doncaster Branch of homeless charity Action Housing & Support social enterprise educational needs are and to help them achieve them. Helping them to change their lives is so rewarding.
GMB has been great and I attend as many UL reps meetings as I can and grab any training that I can get. The more I know the better I can help other people with their educations needs and opportunities.”
