GMB Welcome Announcement By Welsh Government On Non-Emergency Patient Transport Services In Wales NHS
Both non-emergency and emergency services should remain linked clinically so as to ensure that both services are able to provide the best possible services for patients in Wales.
GMB, the union for workers in the health service, welcome the announcement made today (15th January) by Vaughn Gething AM the Deputy Health Minister and commends him and the Welsh Government for supporting the business case for the non-emergency patient transport services (NEPTS) submitted by the Welsh Ambulance Service.
Paul Gage, GMB Regional Officer for the NHS, said “GMB supports the disaggregation of NEPTS from the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) so as to give the emphasis, structure, support and financial resources needed for the NEPTS to be able to serve the people of Wales
GMB commends the decision to keep this service as an integral part of the Welsh NHS, and we look forward to working with the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust and Welsh Government to create the best service that is possible for the people of Wales”.
Nathan Holman, GMB Branch Secretary for the Welsh Ambulance Service, said “We do however urge the Minister to ensure that both NEPTS and EMS remain linked clinically so as to ensure that both services are able to provide the best possible services for patients in Wales”.
It is imperative that the Welsh Ambulance service, working in collaboration with Health Boards, continues to lead on both NEPTS and EMS as as they are the experts in this field, and will allow for a co-ordinated and resilient approach to all forms of patient transport in both emergency and non- emergency situations.
We further welcome the announcement to invest in the service to ensure that it has more of a clinical emphasis rather than just a basic transport service, thereby fully utilising the skills of the workforce and recognising, finally, the differing medical requirements between NEPTS and the EMS service.”
