Support for Safety Reps
GMB Safety Representatives do an absolutely vital job. Although
mainly volunteers, trade union appointed Safety Representatives
have prevented at least ½ million accidents in the last 20 years,
and have saved countless lives that would have been lost without
their intervention.
GMB does not expect Safety Representatives to the job alone. To
carry out their role successfully Safety Representatives need help
and support from their members, and other Safety Representatives
and Shop Stewards.
GMB Safety Reps also have a Regional Organiser who can help and
advise where necessary. In addition each GMB Region has a full time
Health and Safety Officer.
GMB is recognised as the leading union on health and safety in
Britain. GMB Safety Representatives have access to the best health
and safety information available. Our Representatives will be sent
copies of GMB Information Bulletins, Leaflets, Publications and
details of GMB conferences and courses.
All GMB Safety Representatives are fully encouraged to take up
the opportunity to attend health and safety training courses.
Surveys prove that trained Safety Representatives are the most
effective in influencing managers.
Training helps Safety Reps to do the job more effectively and
some courses may also lead to a qualification.
The union also offers advice and information on working in
partnership with employers, and in some cases might even be able to
offer joint training.
