After the applause, pay up for our key workers

Now, more than ever, it is time for government and employers to go beyond their warm words and loud claps. There needs to be recognition, respect and yes, reward. They need to show they really do care for key workers.

That’s why we are asking you to support our campaign for a £2 per hour increase in the basic rate of pay for all key workers – it’s the very least they deserve.

The response to this coronavirus crisis by key workers has shown us what courage looks like. In areas like social care, councils, the NHS and retail, workers are doing so much for all of us.

But after a decade of cuts to budgets and services, many of the courageous key workers on the frontline of this crisis are earning less than £10 per hour.

Almost all the heroes we are clapping for have seen the value of their wages hammered by that same austerity in the form of freezes and real-terms cuts to their pay and conditions.

This crisis has shown there has to be big changes in how we value people and their work. GMB Scotland thinks those changes need to start now.

We need to lift the pressure on the workers who are sacrificing so much right now; the carer looking after our elderly, the refuse operative lifting our rubbish, retail staff making sure our shelves are stocked and paramedics rushing to the sick.

That’s why we are asking you to support our campaign for a £2 per hour increase in the basic rate of pay for all key workers – it’s the very least they deserve.

Our message is simple: After the applause, pay up for our key workers.

Dear First Minister,

But these workers who are sacrificing so much right now have been put under immense pressure by a decade of cuts to budgets and services, with many of the courageous key workers on the frontline of this crisis now earning less than £10 per hour.

The heroes who we are clapping for have seen the value of their wages hammered by austerity in the form of freezes and real-terms cuts to their pay and conditions. That's the carer looking after our elderly, the refuse operative lifting our rubbish, retail staff making sure our shelves are stocked and paramedics rushing to the sick.

Employers and Government, national and devolved, should go beyond warm words and loud claps and take action to recognise, respect and reward key workers to show they really do care.

I am asking you to take the lead in this by supporting GMB Scotland's call for all key workers to be given a £2 per hour increase in their basic rate of pay – it’s the very least they deserve.
