Bring the Carmarthenshire 22 in-house!

GMB are calling on Carmarthenshire County Council to reinstate and bring in-house 22 agency staff working in their theatres after they were laid off with only one week's pay by their outsourced employer.

Agency staff were paid through the local authority's Contingent Workers Scheme, but when the council decided to furlough its own staff the agency refused to do so too, resulting in the local authority cutting payments to all members.

These workers face already poor conditions working across the council's waste, cleansing, residential care and leisure services, which includes theatres. Staff work on low pay and part-time hours with less pension and sick pay rights than their council-employed colleagues.

Despite this, many are long serving members of staff who believe passionately in their roles and the Theatres. Yet they were given a week's notice with their pay stopping after 7 days.

We believe the behaviour of the agency and the local authority is disgraceful. Reinstating staff and bringing them 'in-house' as council employees will help bring these workers the job security they desperately need during this crisis.

Please support our campaign by signing our petition to the Council's Chief Executive Wendy Walters below.

Dear Ms Walters,

On Wednesday 10th June, 22 staff working in theatres owned by Camarthenshire County Council were laid off overnight by the outsourced company they worked for, Randstad, with only one week's paid notice.

Many of these workers are long serving members of staff who have worked passionately in their roles. This is despite agency staff often being employed on zero-hour contracts with poorer pension and sick pay rights than their colleagues working for the council.

Its not right at any time not least in a global pandemic that staff are treated as second class employees and lose their hours and income, with no consultation or discussion about alternatives.

Please do the right thing and reinstate these workers in-house as full employees of the council, so these workers can have the job security they need and deserve.
