UNION

Local government workers deserve a pay rise

GMB is proud to be the union for local government workers. From refuse collectors to teaching assistants, we represent and negotiate on behalf of thousands of public service super heroes who keep the country running.

Years of pay restraint have left a majority of the workforce lagging behind their real-terms pay from 2009. With demand increasing, they’re being asked to do more for less. That’s why GMB, along with the other local government unions, has submitted a ‘catch up’ pay claim. GMB is campaigning for a fair pay rise for all Local Government and School workers and we’re calling on the Government to fully fund pay across public services.

We want your support to make this happen. You can help by asking for your councillor’s support for the pay claim. Fill in the form on this page and click 'sign now' and the email will automatically be sent to your local councillors.

Dear Councillor,

As a local resident, I am writing to ask for your support for the local government unions’ pay claim for local government workers.

As you know, council workers have shouldered a heavy burden in the years of austerity which will take 60p in the pound of government funding away from local authorities by 2020.

They are being asked to do more, as demand for services – in particular care – has increased, with less.

GMB’s campaign for pay justice calls for a reversal of the sharp cuts to living standards experienced by local government workers since 2009/10.

Its only right that central government provides new funding now that ministers have said that austerity is over, so I am writing to ask that you endorse the motion here: gmb.org.uk/local-governmentpay-motion. which supports the joint union pay claim and calls for funding from government. Please could you take this motion to your political party grouping and to full council?

You can also tweet your support for GMB members by using the hashtag #GoPublic.

Many thanks in advance.

Yours sincerely
