Marks and Spencer: End ‘fire and rehire’ in your ethical supply chain

Valeo Confectionery Ltd supply products to Marks and Spencer.

Sadly, workers who make these products at Valeo have been subject to threats of ‘fire and rehire’ to impose poorer terms and conditions on their workers.

We’re asking Marks and Spencer to intervene to stop these tactics and meet with GMB representatives to discuss our concerns.

Sign GMB's open letter to Tony Ginty, Marks & Spencer's Head of Public Affairs, and tell them to end 'fire & rehire' in their ethical supply chain.

Dear Tony,

I am writing to you to express my concern at the use of ‘fire and rehire’ tactics in your ethical supply chain.

Workers at Valeo Confectionery LTD York, who supply your stores with sweets, have been told by management that unless they sign new contracts of worse pay terms and conditions, they will be subject to dismissal and re-engagement.

Many of these workers are on low pay and with the current cost of living crisis have been forced into reducing their own terms and conditions to keep their job.

I know that Marks and Spencer hold themselves to high standards and have pride in their ethical supply chain, so they will be concerned to hear about issues facing these workers.

I therefore ask that you escalate this issue to your Head of Sustainable Business and request a meeting with Valeo Confectionery Ltd and their recognised unions to end ‘fire and rehire’ in your ethical supply chain and work with us to improve workers’ rights.
