Protect proud Potteries jobs from the axe

Wedgwood workers have been producing world-beating fine china and porcelain for 250-years. This iconic British brand is the pride of the Potteries and of our ceramics industry across the world.

The company’s Finish owner Fiskars Corporation have decided that they will no longer manufacture these historic British products in Britain, instead they plan to move production overseas.

Initial fears were that 145 skilled British jobs would be lost from the local community, but after a consultation period that figure is down to 103.

This is a company that received more than £5 million of taxpayer cash to create and keep jobs in the potteries.Yet here they are, slashing jobs and whisking production overseas. It’s a scandal of epic proportions.

We’re happy that less of our members are about to have their jobs taken away from them – but it’s still devastating news.

As if job cuts were'nt enough, last week it emerged Wedgwood had been given £5 million of public money to create and safeguard jobs at its Barlaston factory.

Fiskars say they’re reducing complexity in their business - there’s nothing complicated about this smash and grab of public funds to profit big business.

This is a scandal of epic proportions. The money should be immediately returned to the public purse. Why should the taxpayer pay for a Finnish company to take British jobs overseas?
