SUCCESS: Save Harland and Wolff Shipyard

The Harland and Wolff shipyard is a crucial part of our history and our future - a national asset for UK manufacturing with world-class infrastructure and workforce, and a crucial part of the social fabric of Belfast for more than 150 years.

We’re sick of good jobs being sent overseas when skilled workers in the UK and Ireland are facing the dole.

The workers at Harland and Wolff deserve more than for the yard to wither away - for generations the iconic yard (where the Titanic was built) has supported hundreds of skilled local jobs. But we're not just fighting to preserve history, we want manufacturing to be part of the future too.

We're calling on the government to nationalise Harland and Wolff, save local jobs, and invest in manufacturing.

Dear Julian Smith,

On Monday, 5th August the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast may close. With no rescue plan in place I am urging you to step in now on behalf of the UK Government to follow GMB Union’s call to provide assistance and nationalise the shipyard in order to save local manufacturing jobs, livlihoods and a proud manufacturing community.

The future of Harland and Wolff is more than a ‘commercial issue’ that the Government can stand by and do nothing about. The yard needs new orders, yet the Ministry of Defence has refused to name Harland and Wolff as a possible builder of the Royal Navy’s new RFA Fleet Solid Support ships

This shipyard is a crucial part of our history and our future - a national asset for UK manufacturing with world-class infrastructure and workforce, and a crucial part of the social fabric of Belfast for more than 150 years.

Harland and Wolff workers and Northern Ireland deserves more than for their yard to wither away.

If the Government is serious about investing in nations and regions, in creating skilled jobs and opportunities, then action is needed now. The closure of Appledore shipyard, planned job losses at Cammell Laird and British Steel’s future on the brink at Newport and Scunthorpe show how urgently action is needed. You now have an opportunity to turn the tide on this shocking record - starting with Harland and Wolff.

Nationalisation will keep this yard open in order to protect this vital industry, the jobs that make it and the communities that rely on it. Without a functioning Executive at Stormont, the UK Government must step and do the same for Harland & Wolff.

Yours sincerely,
