There is no easy answer on Brexit. If there had been, we would have found it by now.

The country is divided. There are those with sincere convictions on both sides of the debate.

GMB believes that the only way to heal the nation and move on from Brexit is for the people, not politicians to have the final say. This was a lesson that was learnt in Northern Ireland with the Good Friday Agreement – and it helped build the peace.

As trade unionists, it is the most natural position in the world for us to hold. When we negotiate for our members, we work hard to get the best deal possible. When we have a deal it is our members who decide if it’s acceptable or not.

We’re proud to have led the way in arguing for Labour to back a final say on Brexit with the option to Remain.

Labour will give the people the Final Say on any Brexit deal – unlike the Tories and the Lib Dems who won’t.

It means if you voted remain in 2016 you will be able to get one more chance to vote to stay in the European Union and persuade all your friends that this is the best possible deal.

And if you voted leave in 2016 you will be able to look through the final terms of the deal and decide if that is what you were promised and if that is what you still want.

We understand the strength of feeling, but this common sense and principled approach puts people at the heart of where we go next.

Tim Roahce, GMB General Secretary

It’s what we do as trade unions day in day out.

And with a Labour government we will make sure that the negotiated deal is a better deal for workers than the Tories have so far achieved. It’s in all our interests for that to be on the ballot paper.

Whether we like it or not, a majority voted to Leave in 2016. The Leave campaign was divisive. Tory politicians made promises they had no intention of honouring. There were any number of possible Brexit deal scenarios that could be on the table - even now if you ask people what Brexit means you’ll get a multitude of answers.

"The only way to heal the nation and move on from Brexit is for the people, not politicians to have the final say."

When we know exactly what a deal looks like, we must say to the people ‘here’s what’s on the table’. This is what Brexit looks like.

You can have Brexit on these terms - or you can keep the deal we already have and Remain.

I’m not sure there will be a deal better than what we have when it comes to rights and jobs, but if that’s the case the electorate can make the decision when in possession of the full facts.

Brexit is still on the table if it is the will of the people, but if the electorate has changed their mind we can Remain.

We understand the strength of feeling, but this common sense and principled approach puts people at the heart of where we go next.

This is about our jobs, our rights and our futures.

It’s too important to be left to the politicians at Westminster.

The people must have the final say.
