Latest GMB updates for members working in Forterra

Date: 13/11/2020

Dear GMB Member

This is a very brief update of the situation regarding this year’s pay claim.

The joint unions met with your employer on Thursday 5 November to gauge exactly what Forterra’s views are and importantly whether they are in a position to give a definitive position on this year’s pay claim.

Unfortunately the answer is that your employer at this stage is not in a position to give an answer at the present time on whether it will give a pay award or not to give one.

The main reason is due to the current lockdown, the state of the market and the economy that your employer does not feel comfortable enough to have sensible talks on this important issue.

In turn they have stated that they are prepared to meet again to try to resolve this after the current lockdown has ended on 2 December, and furthermore stated clearly that it is not the case that there will not be a pay rise – all options are being considered, and no decision either way has been made.

At a meeting with joint union local reps and their full time officers it was decided to wait until after 2 December, to then meet with your employer after this date and in the meantime ask for your views in the usual manner through a pay survey to hear the joint union members thoughts.

It was also decided to write to the company explaining what the trade unions are going to do, but to also state clearly to your employer that if it is the case after 2 December and after a meeting date has been confirmed that no offer is forthcoming then really there is no need to meet up. A date for this meeting is yet to be decided.

As ever thank you for your continued membership and we will keep you informed of developments.

Yours sincerely

Dear GMB Member

This is a short statement signed on behalf of the joint trade unions along with your employer to give a brief update on talks which are ongoing on the subject of future terms and conditions.

The company and trade unions met for discussions on Wednesday 30 September.

Whilst there are issues to which needs to be further clarified on both sides, the talks held were undertaken in a positive and mature manner, with the emphasis on trying to reach an agreement suitable to both sides.

Both management and the trade unions aim to be working hard together to seek to resolve outstanding issues, and with this in mind there will be further meetings held to enable further discussions to take place.

With this in mind we ask for your patience on this and we will of course keep you updated in future.

Yours sincerely,

Dear GMB Member

During 2020 we have regularly put the case to your employer that a pay rise should be forthcoming to yourselves. Even in these difficult times we engaged with your employer to try to ensure that for the hard work that you do for FORTERRA that you were rewarded in a fair way.

We are pleased to inform you that your employer has informed us that they are prepared to offer you a 2% pay increase on all rates.

This is the same increase for the brick and building products section of FORTERRA which was accepted by GMB members earlier on this year.

Given the present serious circumstances that your employer finds itself in as a result of COVID 19, and the current dire economic circumstances we very strongly recommend that you accept this offer.

A consultative postal ballot will now take place starting Monday 15 June until Friday 26 June at 12 pm.

These are unprecedented and difficult times and both trade unions thank you for your membership.

We hope you and your families stay safe and well.

Yours sincerely,

Steve Kemp
