Protecting Workers from Covid-19

Dear GMB colleague,

Protecting Workers from Covid-19 GMB is leading the way on behalf of our members at this extremely worrying time for you and your family.

GMB is in regular contact and dialogue with Government and their departments on a regular basis in seeking to influence the policy agenda; we understand advice and guidance changes on almost a daily basis. There are regular updates posted on our national website click below to view.

In terms of your own specific employer, we have sent recent correspondence seeking confirmation and clarification around what provisions are in place to control the risk of exposure to coronavirus; we appreciate that some of these provisions change on a regular basis.

We are also seeking confirmation for example around workers who are required to self-isolate in that they receive full pay from day one, with no impact on or reduction in their existing sick pay entitlement, and no negative consequences in term of disciplinary action on sickness absence grounds.

GMB has also sought confirmation on what provisions employers have put in place on health, safety and welfare provision and risk assessment specific to Covid 19.

As well as communication from National Office, our GMB Regional Organisers, Lay GMB Conveners and Shop Stewards are in regular meetings and dialogue to manage this developing situation, so please keep in touch with them. Your employer has confirmed to GMB that they will manage and communicate locally, and will be in regular dialogue with your local GMB reps.

The company has sent an initial response stating that as they navigate their way through this issue on a daily basis, they are taking into account government guidance, customer requirements and employee health and well-being.

They have highlighted that being a broad organisation with different business set ups, a one size fits all approach is not always necessarily going to work. However, they have confirmed for example that they have in certain circumstances put in place special paid leave provision for employees over 70. Your employer has confirmed to GMB that they are doing all they can to ensure the safety, health and well being of their employees. They have cited that multiple measures are in place, or being put in place, including working from home, flexible shifts, rotations, staggered working, self-isolating, travel bans, social distancing, minimal face to face meetings etc.

Your employer has also confirmed to GMB that it is absolutely their intention that no employees suffer any detriment due to COVID19.
