Thousands of people are calling on the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to block a merger between Asda and Sainsbury’s.

More than 3,500 workers and shoppers have signed a GMB petition urging the CMA to ‘protect our communities and people’s livelihoods and block the merger’. [1]

GMB today formally responded to the CMA’s provisional remedies for the merger. [2]

"What ASDA workers need is certaintity and job security.

Gary Carter, GMB National Officer,

Last month, authority’s report offered two options - complete prohibition of the merger or the potential ‘divestment’ of hundreds of stores and depots.

Today [Wedensday] is the deadline for response the notice of possible remedies published in February.

“GMB was not opposed to the merger – but based on the CMA’s own evidence,  we now have to take a position.

“It will be incredibly damaging, and the only rational response is to stop it from going ahead.

"What ASDA workers need is certaintity and job security.

“The price shoppers and workers face paying for this merger is simply too high.”
