GMB, the union for theatre staff has called out the disgraceful treatment of agency staff working in Carmarthenshire County Council run theatres.

On Wednesday, 22 staff working for the Randstad agency were laid off overnight by the company. The company had refused the council’s request to furlough their staff.

Many of the long-serving agency staff are not entitled to the same pension and sick pay as their colleagues working for Carmarthenshire Council.

The workers were only given one week’s paid notice.

GMB has called both parties’ actions ‘utterly disgraceful’ arguing that long-serving staff have been treated as second class employees.

The union is calling on the council to intervene and ensure staff are paid and protected.

Peter Hill, GMB Regional Organiser stated:

“The way these staff have been treated is utterly disgraceful. Some members have given 17 years of service in the Carmarthenshire's theatres, often for poor hours and low pay.

“The local authority has a duty of care to these staff, and they should step in immediately and intervene to ensure staff receive the pay they are due.
“It’s now time for a long-term plan for the future of our theatre staff.

“It can’t be right that just because of a disagreement over whether the company should  furlough 22 members of their staff, that those 22 are now without regular work. It’s time that the council Go Public, take staff in house, on proper pay and conditions so this farce can never happen again.”
