New documents seen by GMB Union reveal Stoke City Council could be set to slash almost 1,000 jobs.

A statutory redundancy notice issued by the council states there could be a possible 953 redundancies – including 370 in ‘social care, health integration and wellbeing.

But earlier this month, a Stoke Council press release cited a “net reduction of 248 jobs overall”.

GMB is calling on the council to come clean on the extent of the job losses.

Dave Warwick, GMB Organiser, said:

“Stoke Council must stop hiding behind spin and come clean on the extent of these job losses.

“This is not a political game – these are people’s livelihoods and they deserve to know the truth.

“In order to pass this chaotic, ill-thought out plan the minority Tory administration requires the votes of the City Independent group of councillors.

“GMB sincerely hope that these councillors consider whose interests they wish to serve when voting.

“Do they represent the people of Stoke-on-Trent, or the interests of the one per cent of the population the Tory austerity agenda panders to?”
