GMB union has announced today that its members employed by Serco, delivering household waste refuse services in the Derbyshire Dales, have voted overwhelmingly to support industrial action.

The result has been announced after the failure of company management to present a fair pay offer to workers, despite these key workers maintaining vital services for local people throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite sincere and repeated attempts to reach an agreement with the company managers, this decision has been forced on hard working refuse workers across the area.

Local people and residents of the Derbyshire Dales will no doubt be disappointed and shocked by the actions of Serco for once again failing to avoid disruption by supporting its own employees.

Over 90% of members backed industrial action, which could result in significant strike action and disruption to waste collection in the Derbyshire Dales area in coming weeks.

Mick Coppin, GMB Regional Organiser, said:

“This disruption could lead to waste and household rubbish building up in Derbyshire streets. The company needs to be serious about this risk and consider the needs of local communities.

Our members employed by Serco are key workers and want nothing more than to serve their communities and keep Derbyshire clean.

Our members have now sent a clear message in favour of industrial action over this dispute, which could result in strike action in coming weeks. We’ll be with them 100% and are calling on the company to get back around the table with a proper pay offer".

Phil, a local resident in Wirksworth, said:

“Our refuse workers never missed a beat, even at the height of the pandemic. It’s shocking to hear that Serco management are refusing to recognise their hard work.

I know I speak for a lot of local people when I say we support our local refuse workers!”.
