GMB, the union for school support staff, has warned the Department for Education that school staff are demoralised and leaving the profession in droves due to the funding cuts, following comments back earlier today.

Gavin Williamson, the Education Secretary, told BBC Breakfast this morning "things have been a bit tight in schools"

Karen Leonard, GMB National Officer, said:

"'A bit tight' in schools doesn’t begin to cover it.

“The Government must acknowledge that schools have cut staff to such an extent that the health, wellbeing and safety of children and staff in schools have been compromised and education continues to suffer.

“Staff are demoralised and leaving education in their droves.

“We need a sustained programme of funding to reverse these damaging cuts and equip our education system with the tools to achieve the Prime Minister’s stated aim to ‘ensure all young people get the best possible start in life’."
