It’s scarcely believable there is an argument over whether children should go hungry, says GMB Union

The Government is taking food from millions of children’s mouths by refusing to fund free school dinners during the summer holidays, GMB Union has said.

On Monday Ministers confirmed the food vouchers scheme parents have been relying on to feed their families through lockdown would "not run during the summer holidays".

England striker Marcus Rashford has said he would fight on for a u-turn after the Government confirmed it would not provide free school meal vouchers during the summer

GMB has long campaigned for free school meals for all pupils.

Karen Leonard, GMB National Officer, said:

“It’s scarcely believable that, in the middle of a global pandemic, there is an argument over whether children should go hungry through the summer holidays.

"By refusing to give schools extra money in the toughest of circumstances, the Government are literally taking food from the mouths of millions of kids.

“We know many children have virtually no food at home – and their school dinner is the only decent meal they get all day.

"GMB will continue to campaign for free school meals for all until the Conservative Government does the right thing.”
