A year before Northants County Council collapsed, GMB activists were out on the streets on Northamptonshire alerting the government, our members and members of the public to the risk posed by the Tory Council’s precarious finances.

Despite GMB warnings, the council collapsed, unable to pay its bills as they fell due. Months later, the situation is still unclear. The Tory government have failed to provide a bail out for the local authority and instead they have endorsed a reorganisation which despite a projected £100m annual deficit in five years’ time, will provide a measly £6m annual saving and will cost £30m up front.

Worse still, the new authorities will be lumbered with the old debt of the County Council whilst well run and financially solvent councils like Corby Borough Council will be abolished.

Elections have been suspended, protecting the failed councillors and despite the financial chaos, their interim Chief Executive was left pocketing £1000 a day!

Devastating cuts are now hitting public services in the county and the GMB are doing everything we can to protect our members during this period of uncertainty.
