GMB, the steel union, has responded to the collapse of the joint venture between Tata and Thyssenkrupp.

Ross Murdoch, GMB National Officer, said:

“GMB worked hard and in good faith with Tata alongside our sister steel unions in the UK and in Europe to try and reach an agreed position that ensured commitments on jobs and investment – which we did.

“On this basis of said commitments, GMB and sister unions signed up to the joint venture.

“However, more recently, given the remedies sought by the EU Commission and the subsequent remedies proposed in response, this brought into question whether previous agreements and commitments would or could be honoured, as it highlighted an imbalance between what ThyssenKrupp were prepared to offer in terms of remedies, as in our view, it was less than Tata were proposing.

“GMB and our sister unions now expect Tata Steel to consult fully the company’s plans to secure the future of the company in Europe and the livelihoods of their 21,000 European employees.

"Whatever the outcome, GMB is ready to fight hard for every members’ job in the UK steel industry.”
