GMB has today welcomed the news that GMB refuse workers at Serco in the Derbyshire Dales have won their dispute, delivering a pay deal and package of support for members at the company.

This is after months of industrial action, campaigning and negotiating by the GMB, culminating in strike action which saw refuse workers down tools across the district.

Earlier this year Derbyshire Dales refuse workers overwhelmingly voted for strike action after the company refused to improve on a below inflation pay offer – amounting to real terms pay cut for key workers. Likewise, members were raising that they felt disrespected after management were heard describing them as 'just legs and arms’.

After a vote of members at the workplace this week, this new deal has been approved by GMB members and will see refuse workers receive a pay deal in line with inflation, as well as a package of support and commitments from company management.

Support from the local community for GMB’s campaign has been huge, with local people showing their support for striking refuse workers in various ways, including by posting notes of support on their household bins. GMBs campaign was about pay, terms and conditions. However, It was also about improving essential front line public services. Residents and local people have refused to fall into the trap of blaming key workers for the disruption Serco management have caused and the GMB Midland and East Coast would like to put on record it’s thanks to local people and communities across the Derbyshire Dales.

Mick Coppin, GMB Regional Organiser, said:

"This is a big win for GMB refuse workers and we welcome the news that Serco top brass have been brought to the negotiating table by our members campaigning and determination.

Our members are key workers who worked throughout the pandemic to serve their local communities. It’s a shame it ever came to this but we are delighted that they have won the reward and recognition they deserve.

This is a landmark win and employers in the sector should take note; GMB is the union for all refuse workers, and we’re committed to fighting for the fair deal and recognition they deserve".
