Mix of renewables, green gas and new nuclear only way we can keep the lights on when the wind doesn’t blow

GMB has renewed its call for a balanced energy mix after national grid warned of overstretched supplies.

National Grid has warned for the second time in three weeks that supplies of electricity in Britain are going to be stretched as fewer-than-expected power generators will be available at peak times, while it is also forecasting low output from renewable sources such as wind.

Justin Bowden, GMB National Secretary, said:

"GMB has warned again and again that the country must have a balanced energy mix that combines increasing use of intermittent renewables with reliable green gas and new nuclear.

"That’s the only way we can keep the lights on and the economy powered on days like this when output from renewables is lower than expected, because the wind doesn’t always blow and the sun doesn’t always shine. It is common sense."
