Email your local councillor: support our pay claim

Local government and school workers are public service super-heroes.

Keeping our communities clean and safe, keeping our schools open, looking after those in need and keeping our towns and cities running.

Yet over the last ten years these workers have suffered pay restraint - the majority of pay points losing at least 23 per cent of their value since 2009/10.

At the same time, workers have experienced ever-increasing workloads and persistent job insecurity. GMB is campaigning for Pay Justice Now and calls for a reversal of the sharp cuts to living standards experienced by local government and school staff since 2010.

We need councils and councillors across the country to stand up for our key worker heroes.

Please use our simple emailer tool on this page to email your councillor asking they support the pay claim submitted by GMB and sister unions.

Dear Local Councillor,

As a local resident, I am writing to ask for your support for the local government unions’ pay claim for local government workers.

As you know, council workers have shouldered a heavy burden in the years of austerity which took 60p in the pound of government funding away from local authorities in 2020.

They are being asked to do more, as demand for services throughout the pandemic has massively increased. The efforts of our local government and schools workers over the last year have been heroic.

GMB’s campaign for Pay Justice Now calls for a reversal of the sharp cuts to living standards experienced by local government workers since 2009/10.

It’s only right that central government provides local government a proper funding settlement - one that reflects the phenomenal work of local government and one that provides a credible settlement to the forthcoming pay round for local government workers.

I am writing to ask that you endorse the motion here which calls for funding from government to pay for the pay rise that local government and schools workers deserve.

Please could you take this motion to your political party grouping and to full council?

You can also tweet your support for GMB members by using the hashtag #PayJusticeNow

For more information about the campaign or to let us know you are taking the motion forward, email tom.warnett@gmb.org.uk

Many thanks in advance.

Yours sincerely,
