JOB DESCRIPTION
GMB’s National Office is seeking applications for the position of National Officer.
GMB is one of the UK and Ireland’s largest general trade unions, proudly representing more than half a million members from across the workforce and from all walks of life. We are driven by strong values of fairness, equality, solidarity and collective action.
We are seeking to appoint a National Officer to lead a large industrial remit that could cover a number of sectors representing our members. The successful candidate must therefore be willing and able to work across any GMB industrial section or remit, as required.
GMB is a strong, campaigning union that fights for improved rights and protections for working people — from fair pay, health and safety and holidays, to equal pay, secure terms and conditions and dignity at work. If it matters to our members, we organise, campaign and negotiate to deliver change.
This is a senior role within a dynamic and progressive national team, helping to shape and deliver GMB’s industrial strategy at a national level. The post-holder will lead on industrial negotiations, organising priorities and national campaigns across the union.
The role requires a high level of credibility and experience, including:
- Significant and demonstrable negotiation and collective bargaining expertise
- A proven track record of delivering membership growth through effective organising and campaigning
- The ability to operate with authority and confidence across complex industrial and political environments
As a National Officer, the post-holder will also represent GMB publicly, including engagement with the media, politicians, employers and other stakeholders. Strong communication skills and the ability to build and sustain productive relationships, often in challenging circumstances, are essential.
The successful candidate will be able to:
- Provide strategic leadership, setting organising and industrial objectives for relevant sectors through GMB’s democratic processes
- Lead and maintain effective relationships with employers, officers, lay representatives, other trade unions, the TUC and political stakeholders
- Provide national leadership and specialist expertise on industrial negotiations and national campaigns
- Influence, organise and negotiate effectively, drawing on a strong track record of representation and delivery
- Work collaboratively, demonstrating flexibility, adaptability, initiative and a commitment to collective leadership
Information about the role
- The post is based at GMB’s National Office and requires regular attendance in Euston, London. We will however consider requests for an alternative standard place of work at another GMB regional office.
- The role involves regular travel across all four nations of the UK to attend regional and national meetings and events.
- Hours of work are designated as unspecified. The role will therefore involve working unsocial hours when required, including evenings and weekends.
- Assessment Centre and Interview dates will be confirmed in due course
In return, we offer excellent terms and benefits, including:
- Final salary pension scheme
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Childcare Assistance Scheme
