GMB Trade Union - 22,000 ceramics jobs at risk from Tory Brexit plan

GMB, business groups and employers all agree - the Govt must stop this zero tariff madness before it's too late

New analysis by GMB, the ceramics union, shows 22,000 jobs will be lost if the Tory's plan to smash the potteries goes ahead.

Early next week, the Conservative's are expected to lay a ‘Statutory Instrument’ on unilateral zero tariffs in the event of a no-deal - the principal form of delegated legislation, basically a quick way of making something law.

If this happens Britain's proud ceramics industry will be crushed under floods of cheap imports.

GMB estimates this will cost up to 22,000 jobs, almost 9,000 of them in Stoke, not to mention the decimation of the local economy.

We need to make sure the Conservative Party don’t smash our ceramics industry to pieces.

Amanda Gearing, GMB Senior Organiser:

In an unprecedented move trade unions, business groups and employers have teamed up to demand the Government does not pass a law that could mean the end of the centuries old Stoke ceramics industry.

Amanda Gearing, GMB Senior Organiser, said:

"The Stoke ceramics industry is 100s of years old. Now, if the Conservative's get their away, it could be dead within weeks.

"This will cost more than 22,000 jobs and spell the tragic end of a proud British industry.

“GMB, business groups and employers all agree - the Government must stop this zero tariff madness before it's too late.

“We need to make sure the Conservative Party don’t smash our ceramics industry to pieces.”
