GMB Trade Union - Welsh carers scoop big award after saving care home

Care workers from Wales who fought to save a doomed nursing home from closure have been handed a prestigious national award at GMB's annual congress today [Monday].

Louren Evans and Carly Harries [picture attached], carers at Ferndale House in Rhondda Cynon Taff, were given accolade after leading a campaign to save the facility which was under threat from the local authority.

Thanks to their efforts, dozens of vulnerable residents who were in danger of losing their home were able to stay where they belong.

Leanne Chapman, GMB Regional Organiser, said:

“Louren and Carly, with their tireless efforts and commitment, exemplify the spirit of the Eleanor Marx Award.

“Through activism, hard work and tenacity, their campaign has become a beacon of hope for care workers and the wider community.

“We’re really proud of Louren and Carly’s amazing achievement as a shining example of union activism making a real difference in people’s lives.”
