GMB Trade Union - Workers meet MPs to call for changes to equal pay law

Workers will meet MPs in Parliament today [Wednesday] calling on them to back changes to equal pay legislation.

The event, which takes place at 2pm today in Portcullis House, is hosted by GMB Union which is behind 24 local authority equal pay claims across the UK on behalf of tens of thousands of workers,

GMB Union has long campaigned for changes to the law around equal pay and was instrumental in getting commitments to do so into Labour’s election manifesto.

General Secretary Gary Smith and workers representing GMB will tell politicians the legislative changes needed to stop gender pay inequality, including:

  • A new regulatory and enforcement body
  • Enhanced pay transparency
  • Reforming court process so it’s faster, fairer and more affordable for those who cannot afford legal bills
  • Close the outsourcing loophole.

Gary Smith, GMB General Secretary said;

“It’s an utter disgrace working women are still paid less than men for work of equal value, more than 50 years after the equal pay act.

“As the law stands, the only way to enforce your right is to sue your employer.

“That can take up to 15 years, cost millions of pounds and is exceptionally complicated legally.

The currently system is not delivering for women and not delivering for the UK.

“GMB us urging MPs to back our proposed changes to the law, so millions of working people can finally access the equal pay they deserve.”
